Darin Johnson, 54 A Man of Boats, Laughter, and Big Hearts (and Even Bigger Fish Stories)

Darin Johnson, 54, of Vidor, Texas, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 25, 2025 at Beaumont Baptist Hospital, after a short but fierce battle with cancer.

Born with a fishing rod in one hand and probably a hunting rifle in the other (figuratively speaking—his mom would like to clarify that), Darin was happiest outdoors. Whether it was early mornings on quiet waters with his favorite boat or in the woods during hunting season, nature was his happy place. His second favorite place? Right in the middle of a good conversation—usually with someone he’d just met five minutes ago.

Darin had a gift for connection. He could strike up a conversation with just about anyone, and more often than not, he’d leave them smiling. He had that rare knack for making people feel at home, welcomed, and maybe even like they were the funniest person in the room—though truth be told, Darin probably was.

A dedicated employee at Pete Jorgensen Marine in Beaumont, Texas, Darin absolutely loved selling boats. He wasn’t just good at his job—he was passionate about it. Helping people find the perfect boat for their adventures was more than a job; it was a way for Darin to share his love of the water and the outdoors with others. His colleagues and customers alike will always remember his enthusiasm and the way he made buying a boat feel like the start of a great adventure.

Darin was also an active and committed member of the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA), where he held numerous board positions over the years. His dedication to preserving and protecting the coastal environment mirrored his love of fishing, and he worked tirelessly to ensure future generations could enjoy the same waters and wildlife he held so dear.

He was the proud and loving husband of Samantha, and the adoring dad to twins Wyatt and Ainsley, who were the center of his world. He never missed a chance to brag about them—or laugh with them. Or at them, lovingly, of course.

Darin is survived by his devoted wife Samantha; children Wyatt and Ainsley; his parents, Michael and Dana Johnson; his sister, Michele (David) DeFay; his in-laws Ralph and Hazel Ochoa; sister-in-law Wendy (Mark) Mann; sister-in-law Diana Ochoa; brother-in-law Ralph (Salynda) Ochoa Jr. and his best friend and brother by another mother, Steve Manrose. He also leaves behind a host of friends, family, and countless fishing & hunting buddies who will always remember his warmth, humor, and unforgettable presence.

Darin’s legacy is one of joy, kindness, and really great stories—many of which may or may not have been slightly exaggerated, especially if they involved fish. He taught us to slow down, enjoy the view, and never take life (or ourselves) too seriously.

A celebration of Darin’s life will be held on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at Memorial Funeral Home of Vidor. Family and friends—and anyone who ever shared a boat, a story, or a laugh with Darin—are welcome to attend.
