James Archie Butts, a beloved resident of Vidor, Texas, passed away on Thursday, August 24th, 2023, at the age of 86. He took his last breath at MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, strength, and generosity.

Born in Houston, Texas, James was the cherished child of Clyde and Mabel Butts. He grew up with a profound love for his country and served with honor in the US Marine Corps. His dedication and skill as a marksman earned him the esteemed Expert Marksman Medal, a testament to his commitment and proficiency.

A man of many passions, James found solace in the art of fishing. The waters became his sanctuary, where he could unwind and connect with nature. He had an insatiable appetite for the outdoors, finding joy in every facet of the natural world. His hands were skilled in both mending and creating, as he fearlessly tackled tasks, ranging from repairing to fabricating. Building was not just a hobby, but a source of immense satisfaction for him.

James had a unique gift for making connections. His warm and welcoming demeanor meant that he never met a stranger – his ability to forge friendships was unmatched. He was a steward of his environment, tending to his yard with meticulous care and pouring his heart into gardening and landscaping. His generosity knew no bounds; he found joy in giving and sharing with those around him. He approached life with an unwavering optimism, believing in the inherent goodness within each person. To James, every individual had the potential to showcase their best self. His positive outlook was infectious, and he had a knack for cultivating friendships that lasted a lifetime.

Services for James will begin on Thursday, August 31, 2023, with a visitation beginning at 1:00 PM and the funeral service at 2:00 PM at Memorial Funeral Home of Vidor with interment to follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in Vidor.

James Archie Butts was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Mabel Butts, as well as his sister Patricia Butts Harvey.

He is survived by his loving wife, Aleta Butts. He is also survived by his only brother, Conrad Earl Butts, of Houston, TX. James' legacy lives on through his daughter, Laura Butts French, of Montgomery, TX, and his son, Hart Christopher Butts, and wife Stacey, of Vidor, TX. His love also extended to his stepdaughter, LaDonna Smith Clark, and husband Rick of Hemphill, TX, and stepson Carroll Jason Smith and wife Myra of Haynesville, LA.

James was a proud grandfather, and his memory lives on through his grandchildren: CWO4 Ret. Aaron Courts, SFC Ryan Courts, Brandon Courts, Jewel Meagan Terrell, Logan Butts, Travis Clark, Cody Clark, AnnaGrace Smith, Cade Smith, and Aubrey Smith. Additionally, his legacy continues through the lives of 13 great-grandchildren.

As friends and family gather to remember James, they do so with gratitude for the light he brought to their lives. His passion, his kindness, and his enduring belief in the goodness of humanity will forever be etched in the hearts of all who knew him.
