John Harold Calaway, 70, of Sandia, TX, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at Harbor Hospice House in Beaumont, TX. Born and raised in Alice, TX, John was a longtime resident of Baytown during his career as a State Trooper before retiring to Lake Corpus Christi in Sandia. He proudly served as a DPS officer and Sergeant Investigator for 26 years, followed by 8 years with Live Oak County as a deputy officer.
John was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, shooting, and spending time with his family. He was a Golden Gloves boxer and a standout athlete, honored as a Tarleton State University Hall of Fame inductee in 2015 for his role as a defensive tackle on the 1977 championship conference team. He was named Officer of the Year by the 100 Club and was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Hamilton, TX.
John is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Jeanne Calaway of Sandia, TX; daughter Jennifer Peddy and husband Allen of Vidor, TX; son Jarret Calaway and wife Amy of Lumberton, TX; brother James Calaway of Sandia, TX; and grandchildren Drake, Colton, Daylen, Braxton, Braylee, and Hank. He was preceded in death by his parents, Woodrow and Hazel Helen Calaway, and sisters, Charlotte Greer and Judy Anderson.
